The PD Pulse 190
is a specific size (190 sq. ft.) of the Performance Designs Pulse main parachute canopy, designed for novice to experienced skydivers.
It is known for its reduced pack volume and stress-free flight characteristics.
Key Features and Performance
Design: It is a lightly elliptical, 9-cell canopy.
Target User: It is suitable for a wide range of skydivers, from novice to experienced “fun jumpers,” including wingsuiters.
Openings: Users find the openings to be consistently soft and on-heading. Flight Characteristics: It offers a very flat glide, a short recovery arc, and easy, responsive handling.
Landing: It provides easy landings, but some users note the flare can be weak compared to other canopies, which may require more attention during the landing approach, especially for less experienced jumpers.
A landing performance upgrade was issued in August 2012 to address some of these characteristics.
Pack Volume: The canopy has a significantly reduced pack volume, achieved by combining Zero-Porosity (ZP) fabric on the top with proprietary low-bulk fabric on the bottom. This makes it pack up to a full size smaller than comparable ZP-only canopies.
Material: It features ultra-lightweight and rigid boron fiber material (in newer models and certain flex ratings) which creates a high strength-to-weight ratio.
Pros:
Easy to pack: A primary advantage, due to its low-bulk fabric technology.
Forgiving openings: Users often praise its reliable and consistent on-heading openings.
Predictable flight: Described as highly responsive, very capable, and fun to fly.
Cons:
Weak flare: Some reviewers mention that the landing flare is relatively weak, which can be challenging for some users until they adjust their landing technique.
Durability (on older models/specific lines): While generally considered well-built, some older models or specific line sets might have varying durability as noted in forum discussions about used gear.
